A number of complaints made against mobile phone scammers are being investigated by Trading Standards, it has been revealed.
Believed to be taking place in Swansea, the scam involves people being tempted into new, illegitimate mobile phone insurance.
David Picken, Divisional Officer in the Council, says: "Many of them who had bought new mobile phones from reputable retail outlets received unsolicited phone calls often within hours of the purchase and offering insurance for the phone."
He adds that some customers were misled into believing it was the retailer from which they bought the phone ringing them, falling victim to the fraudsters.
More than ten companies are currently under investigation, with consumers reminded to use reputable firms when purchasing a handset or insurance.
According to a report published by the International Telecoms Union, there are over four billion mobile phone subscriptions across the world.
