Cost of texting abroad set to be slashed

24 April 2009

The cost of sending texts within the UK will be reduced under new proposals from the European Parliament, it has been announced.

It will mean that the cost of sending a text in Europe will be capped at 9p, which could mark a decrease of as much as 60% for some users.

"The new regulation on data charges will put a stop to the nasty shocks that people have received when they return from holiday," comments Fiona Hall, Liberal Democrat MEP.

She adds that many receive extortionate bills when they return home for "simply checking the football scores on their mobiles".

Other features will include a text message, which the mobile phone user will receive once they have spent a set amount using their handset.

With uSwitch.com, finding that ideal mobile phone package could not be easier.

Overseas holidaymakers were warned by the price comparison site earlier this month to check the transaction fees imposed by their credit card providers when using them abroad.
