Mobile handsets 'becoming more capable'

5 May 2009

Mobile phones are becoming more capable, with people finding they can do more than ever before, says one expert.

Kevin Burden, Practice Director of Mobile Devices at ABI Research, says more handsets have touch-screens, which gives them more desirability.

He continues: "The iPhone brought a lot of awareness to the general consumer and their mobile phones - 'What if my phone can do that? Can my phone get the internet? Can my phone download applications?"

People who already have these phones are now discovering just what they can do, the expert suggests.

According to data from ABI Research, mobile handset vendors had shipped 258 million handsets by the end of the first quarter of 2009.
