Orange has given the go-ahead for travellers to be able to use their mobile phones in the air, it has been said.
A spokesperson from the network revealed that it had agreed a deal with On-Air to enable pay monthly customers to make calls.
The service will initially be made available on selected airlines, he said, emphasising that "customers will be advised by the airline during flights whether the service is available and how much it will cost them on average".
Customers will be required to connect to the On-Air network to make and receive calls and texts he added, with mobile phone users able to receive messages free of charge.
Orange recently announced it was to start offering business customers five new laptops and access to a 2/3G network for mobile data.
