As Ryanair gears up to offer in-flight mobile phone services, an aviation expert has warned that charges for making calls onboard aircraft will not be cheap. Laurence Price, the Director of Aviation Strategy at Mott MacDonald, said mobile phone networks are likely to charge a premium for the use of handsets in the air. "I'd hate to think what the charge per minute will be, I doubt whether it's cheap," he remarked. Ryanair is fitting 14 of its planes with technology that will allow passengers to make and receive calls on their mobile phones without interfering with the aircraft systems. The service will be available to customers on the O2 and 3 networks. O2 said in-flight call charges will vary - depending on the destination - between £1.65 and £1.99 per minute for voice calls. Texts will cost 40 pence. Mr Price said the service will act as a potential revenue earning stream for Ryanair.
