Nationwide index shows rise in savers
However, 21% of people are still failing to put any cash aside, with the threat of rising inflation proving to be one of the major barriers.
The amount of consumers not saving anything at all has nevertheless fallen compared to the previous month.
"This could have been because of the recent increase in VAT meaning people spent less money and therefore had more money to save," suggested Nationwide's Andy Hutchinson.
He also revealed that many people will have made it their New Year resolution to save more frequently.
Results from the Nationwide Consumer Confidence survey show a three-point improvement between January and December.
