Personal loan market lid lifted

31 March 2005

Lloyd's TSB has today disclosed some of the rather unusual reasons as to why consumers in the UK have applied for personal loans in the past 12 months.

Whilst home improvements feature largely on the applications, top of the strange tree for 2004 was a £20,000 loan request needed to kit out a cave to turn into a liveable domicile.

Another loan request for £15,000 was asked for to purchase a camel, a £5,000 request came in for a suit of armour and a £10,000 loan was needed for a black stallion.

Tony Gibbons, director of Lloyds TSB Personal Loans, said: "Most customers come to us to borrow money for more traditional pursuits such as DIY, holidays, or even a used car.

"But our annual list is a refreshing reminder that Brits still have a healthy dose of eccentricity and ambition."

He added: "Whether it's a houseboat or a horse that's top of the list, a personal loan is a great way for people to get what they want, in a way that's affordable."
