Loans for love over football

7 April 2005

Men in the UK should seek out personal loans to finance the increasing amounts of money they are spending on loved ones, financial experts have suggested.

A new report has shown that the total amount of cash spent by Britain's male contingent on their other halves has soared in recent times and indeed now even eclipses that spent by men following their beloved football team.

An average of £805 per year is thought to be being spent by men on their partners, according to the survey conducted by Virgin Money.

This estimate dwarfs the £482 spent by football followers during a typical year.

"Gone are the days when football fans were seen as loving their team more than their partner," commented John Franklin of Virgin Money Credit Card.

"Generous British men are splashing out even more to keep the romance alive and can be seen down the local bistro and flower shop as often as they're down the football ground."

Where they are going wrong however is through the way in which they are paying for these gestures.

Consolidating credit card repayments and switching to a personal loan from a high interest credit card could help save huge sums of money each year.
