Home improvement specialists have highlighted Britons' obsession with DIY home improvements.
Part of this interest has been attributed to TV property make-over shows, which have significantly raised the awareness of homeowners in the UK of the benefits of adding value to their houses, reports This Is Money.
There are currently at least 15 home improvement based property programmes on television, and as a result more Brits are trying out things and ideas that they would not normally have considered.
Chief executive of Buildstore, whose sales of self-build homes are increasing, told This Is Money: "Four or five years ago we were a nation obsessed with celebrity chefs.
"Now, there are literally hundreds of programmes across terrestrial and cable networks that offer advice on self-build. This has had a direct impact upon the industry with people seeing the opportunities and going for it."
However, home improvements, in spite of the value they may add to a property, can be expensive, and a loan can be one way of funding such a venture.
