Lovestruck Britons are pushing the boat out for the honeymoon of a lifetime – increasingly relying on loans in order to do so.
Twenty-nine per cent are paying for their honeymoons by borrowing, according to research from National Savings and Investments – quite a commitment given that the average honeymoon now costs £2,863.
One in seven plans to spend over £5,000 on their first couple of weeks of matrimonial bliss, and only 23 per cent said that had saved money specifically for the occasion.
Karen Jones, marketing manager at National Savings and Investments, said: "Many of us dream about finding our ideal partner and having a fabulous wedding, but are not necessarily aware of the costs involved."
Six per cent of those questioned said they are planning to take out a personal loan to cover their costs, and 23 per cent may use a credit card – so it is important that the right one is chosen with such a sizeable outlay at stake.
