Better-coordinated advice could help UK people resolve debt problems more effectively and at an earlier stage, a government report has found.
The study, entitled Getting Earlier, Better Advice To Vulnerable People, said that debt was one of three areas in which the public could benefit from better independent advice from central and local government.
It aims to help the most vulnerable and socially excluded in society to obtain advice on their debt circumstances more easily.
Constitutional affairs minister Harriet Harman said: "This important report underlines the crucial role that independent, locally-based advice can have in improving the quality of life for individuals, and the quality of service in the public sector."
She added: "It is a significant contribution to our wider examination of legal aid and advice services. It will be given full weight in developing effective policies to deliver these valuable services."
