World Cup tourists urged to check short term borrowing options

Nationwide is urging the thousands of fans travelling to Germany for this summer's World Cup to consider their short term borrowing options before they leave.

With the building society estimating that the average fan will be spending £1,400 in Germany, it has urged them to consider their short term borrowing options such as credit and debit cards.

Travelling fans should pack a card that can be used abroad without an additional charge, it has advised. Both its credit and debit cards offer this. It also said that its credit card is the only one from a major company to offer a positive order of payments that will help fans avoid paying unnecessary interest.

In addition, the company has urged travelling supporters to make purchases on their cards payable in euros rather than sterling.

"With all the excitement surrounding this year's World Cup it is easy for people to give football priority over their finances. However, travelling fans who act now can avoid paying the price later," said Stuart Bernau, Nationwide's executive director.

"Many of these extra charges are difficult for consumers to spot before using their debit or credit cards.

"By packing a Nationwide card before setting off for Germany, fans can take advantage of our positive order of payments and free card use for debit cardholders and avoid being out of pocket when the final whistle blows on the tournament," he added.
