Warning on Thanksgiving hackers

23 November 2007

The US Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally a time for culinary over-indulgence, sports-watching and taking time off work.

However, in recent times it has also represented a time in which cases of computer hacking for others' personal and financial details are at a yearly high - which could cause a personal loans nightmare for consumers.

Upon gaining credit card or bank details through fraudulent means, taking out an unsecured personal loan is an easy way for fraudsters to gain quick funds.

With the increased hacker activity in mind, Managing Director of Global Secure Systems David Hobson warned UK companies and internet users to keep an eye on their security procedures this weekend.

"US hackers usually take advantage of the long holiday weekend to generate all sorts of attacks on internet-connected computer systems worldwide," he said.

Mr Hobson also gave further advice to UK companies, whose systems may be targeted on what industry website VNUnet refers to as Black Friday.

"Thanksgiving in the US is the time when retailers give out freebies to their customers," he added.

"Companies in the UK should watch out for hacker freebies that take the shape of malware-infected email and other digital mayhem. This is always a bad time of the year for malware."
