A number of factors such as rising food prices and mortgages have meant that there has been a rise in the number of people asking for help for debt problems, the Citizens Advice Bureau has stated.
During the first two months of the year, the organisation claimed that 215,000 more individuals asked for help then they had done in the corresponding period in 2007.
Teresa Perchard, Citizens Advice Director of Policy, claimed that recent price rises have meant that consumers are feeling the pressure when they have other worries anyway.
She commented: "The combination of big increases in household bills, especially fuel, and rising housing costs is putting additional pressure on people's finances when they are already stretched to the limit."
Ms Perchard added that the current situation is "worrying", especially as people are struggling to cope with even simple payments.
And people who have debt, possibly as a result of personal loans, should seek to get help as quickly as possible, the official advised.
Recently, the Christian's Against Poverty group in Somerset said it was going to give help to those with debt problems.
