Debts 'hurting people in many ways'

23 April 2008

The pressures exerted by personal debt are proving to be a massive strain on many families, one organisation has warned this week.

Christians Against Poverty (Cap) said that it carried out a survey and found a worrying number of trends, such as the fact that 67% of individuals have skipped eating in order to deal with debt.

Furthermore, 23% of those polled said their relationships had been impacted upon because of such worries, which may have been generated via personal loans.

Head of Cap UK Matt Barlow considered the findings to be "shocking" and warned that debt is a daily, unavoidable problem.

"Our results provide strong evidence that families and couples across the UK are being pushed to breaking point and beyond, with many not eating properly, taking medication and splitting up as they can no longer cope," he asserted.

Earlier this week the charity Shelter revealed that the number of home repossessions - caused by debt - could rise to 60,000 in 2008.
