Citizens Advice call for Chancellor help

29 April 2008

Citizens Advice (CA) has written to Alistair Darling, the chancellor, after the 10p tax rate was abandoned in the UK.

People who have been hit by this change ought to be compensated by the government, "quickly and effectively", the outfit suggested.

A number of possible avenues of support were released by CA, such as giving those under the age of 25 who do not have children availability of working tax credit.

Social Policy Officer at the organisation Katie Lane suggested that personal debt - possibly created on personal loans - may be added to with the changes.

"Every year CA bureaux provide advice on nearly 3.5 million problems relating to welfare benefit, tax credit and debt. The effect of the removal of the 10p starting rate of income tax is therefore of great concern to us," she commented.

She added that complex claiming methods could make it difficult for those affected to see the changes.

Labour MP Frank Field has said his will push to get the 10p rate of tax reinstated if poorer people are impacted on by its removal.
