Telford debt 'a large problem'

9 June 2008

Debt is apparently taking hold in Telford in Shropshire, according to new figures released by the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

Telford & Wrekin CAB noted that 40% of the cases it dealt with in the past financial year were linked to debts, reports the Shropshire Star.

Mortgage debts are not included as part of the statistics, but other forms of credit such as cards, car loans and personal loans.

Service Director at the CAB Lyn Brayne commented that the situation is a dangerous one and that something ought to be done so that it is halted.

"Right now our most frequent inquiries are debt related. At the moment between a third and half of the people coming through our doors have debt problems," she told the paper.

Ms Brayne added that the figures are at present "staggering" and that consumers should seek help as opposed to trying to forget about the problems they face.

Last week, the Competition Commission warned consumers about loan protection insurance policies.
