'Middle-classes' hit by rising debts

4 July 2008

A growing number of middle-class people in the north-east are requesting help over their debts, including personal loans, it has been claimed. Since Christmas, noted Christians Against Poverty, there has been a significant rise in the amount of pleas made by those who earn a reasonable amount, reports the Northern Echo. Manager of the organisation's Durham branch Janet Hayes revealed that people in this bracket often purchase expensive cars and take out items such as store cards. They also have mortgage loans, she stated. She told the paper: "Many are under threat of repossession, have been trying to sell their homes for a long period of time to clear debt and are struggling to make mortgage repayments." And those who are middle-class look down upon themselves for having gotten into such situations, she asserted, as in some cases the debts are hidden from loved ones. This week consultancy Thomas Charles suggested that more service providers may threaten homeowners with repossessions because they are not repaying credit.
