Brits opting for simple home improvements

10 April 2006

The UK's DIYers are now favouring more simple, straight forward home improvements that add value to their homes, according to an annual survey by the Halifax.

Three quarters of those asked said that their home improvements involved new wallpaper and repainting.

The analysis of the nation's home improvement habits found that over the last decade there has been a shift away from the so called 'warmth factor', covering items such as double glazing.

Laminate flooring is now growing in popularity, the building society said.

Of those who were anticipating starting some home improvements over the next 12 months, 67% said that they would be redecorating, while 36% chose to buy new furnishings or make improvements in the garden.

Donna Spencer, head of secured lending at Halifax, said: "The continued desire to improve their homes shows that people are taking a responsible attitude towards their properties and enjoying making the most of them.

"DIYers appear to be favouring simple, straight forward, inexpensive home improvements, which add value and update the look of an entire house, without the need for specialised materials or tools."
