47% of Brits plan home improvements

5 June 2006

Almost half of householders in the UK are planning to carry out home improvements over the next 12 months, according to a survey.

Around 21.3 million people, or 47% of Brits, are planning to improve some aspect of their home with an average expenditure of £5,478, according to research by Capital One.

Its study found that 1.8 million people even plan to spend in excess of £10,000 on the changes.

The total bill for planned home improvements in the UK over the next year comes to £116.9 billion, meaning Brits will be on the look out for cheap credit, according to Justin Basini of Capital One Homeowner Loans.

"Much of this expenditure will be financed through credit, so it's important that people shop around for competitive rates," he said.

Those in the Midlands were found to be planning to spend the most on home improvements, with Scottish home owners spending the least.
