Desperate borrowers forge payslips

18 June 2007

Increasing financial demands are leading some consumers to desperate lengths, with the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP) finding that more borrowers are purchasing faked payslips in order to gain a greater loan amount.

Fake payslips can be obtained for as little as 10, according to the IPP. Consumers could also use their tenner to buy a P60 which displays the chosen company name, salary and personal details to suit the buyer's purpose.

A statement on the IPP website warns consumers not to be fooled by the promises of these falsifying websites.

"These websites can not legally verify the details provided by consumers looking to buy fake pay slips as the only official parties who would prove salary information - the payroll departments of their employer and the Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs - are bound by the Data Protection Act," it read.

If these practices are allowed to continue, the IPP warns that cases of fraud are likely to rise and with it, the cost of taking out a loan, as the lenders look to recoup monies lost through false declarations.
