Co-op goes above and beyond its carbon emission targets
Much of the emissions were saved through the replacement of refrigeration equipment with more efficient alternatives and ensuring no gas leaks could occur from any of its fridges.
Peter Marks, Chief Executive of the Group, said: "Despite the economic downturn we have remained true to our pledge to show the way on corporate responsibility. The one million new members we now have bears testimony to the continued support we have had from our customers."
Since releasing news of meeting its prior commitments the Co-operative has raised the bar even higher, pledging a 50% reduction in emissions by 2020 and 30% less water consumption by just two years time.
The Co-operative Group came from the merging of several co-operatives in Rochdale in 1844 and still has headquarters in Manchester.
