Ken Livingstone has brought rising energy costs into the London mayoral race, pledging to cut costs and boost energy efficiency.

Insulation, helping vulnerable customers and cutting prices have all been included in this latest development in the London mayoral election.

Energy is going to be ‘mayoral priority’ if he is elected in the election on the 3 May 2012.

It’s not the first time the Labour candidate has brought energy efficiency into the political arena.

Last month, Livingstone named ‘retro-fitting all London's buildings to make them energy efficient’ as one of the changes he would make if elected.

The sentiment is reflected in today’s pledges, as he promised to ‘insulate hundreds of thousands of homes’ as part of a drive to make London more energy efficient.

The candidate for London mayor has produced a more detailed range of measures to help make energy a more manageable cost for Londoners.

"If I’m elected I will call an immediate Energy Summit of all the main domestic energy suppliers and chair a ‘Warm Green Homes’ task force to provide leadership and take action to cut Londoner’s fuel bills.

”These range from the more familiar approaches, such as having the homes of those vulnerable to fuel poverty insulated in order to bring energy bills down, to the more radical, such as a ‘London Energy Purchasing Co-operative’, creating a co-operative that would enable Londoners to buy their energy directly from wholesale.

“I will establish the first ever London Energy Purchasing Co-operative to provide a cheaper alternative to the big energy companies and save Londoners money,” he said, adding:

“And finally I will make energy costs a Mayoral priority.

Energy price rises also made an appearance with the Mayoral candidate promising to ‘act’ when they occur.

 Ken Livingstone has promised to:

1. Secure London’s fair share of national energy efficiency funding to help cut Londoners’ energy bills by £150 a year

2. Prioritise insulating older people’s homes.

3. Establish the first ever London Energy Purchasing Co-operative.

4. Make cutting Londoner’s fuel bills and reducing carbon emissions a Mayoral priority.
