Homeowners should consider retrofitting their properties so they are more environmentally-friendly, an expert has proposed.

Andrew Leech, Director of the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC), emphasised that improving energy efficiency can be achieved in a variety of ways.

"If you have cavity walls, these need to be insulated, if they have lofts these also need to be insulated," he explained.

Mr Leech emphasised that people need to be sympathetic towards the style of the property they are renovating, as they will require different refurbishments.

London is already setting a good example when it comes to improving energy efficiency, with other major cities such as Leeds and Manchester following suit.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change recently revealed a green transformation of Britain's homes will take place over the next ten years, making them more comfortable, warmer and cheaper to run.

Installing some technologies, such as solid wall insulation, could see energy bills cut by £380 a year, it said.
