Thames water restrictions to affect 8m

13 March 2006

The UK's largest water company Thames Water has announced that it is to impose a hosepipe ban on its customers.

Eight million people are to be affected by the restriction, which has been forced on the company due to very low levels of rainfall in the South East region of the country.

It is the first time in fifteen years that Thames Water has imposed such a restriction.

It will come into effect on April 3rd and its customers in the Thames Valley, London, East Kent and West Gloucestershire will no longer be able to use sprinklers or hosepipes.

In an announcement to the company's customers Jeremy Pelczer, Thames Water's chief executive, said: "Of course, we are reluctant to limit the amount of water you can use, but we need to take action to protect the environment and lessen the likelihood of further restrictions at a later date.

"We are doing everything we can to increase supplies and save water ourselves. We remain absolutely committed to reducing leakage as rapidly as possible, and are spending more than £500,000 per day on this essential task."
