Water companies issued with odour code of conduct

12 April 2006

The government has issued water companies and local authority regulators with a new code of practice.

Defra's Code of Practice on Odour Nuisance from Sewage Treatment Works will act as a guide to good practice on an issue often annoying to local residents.

"There is a clear public demand to minimise the impact of unpleasant odours from waste water treatment works," said local environmental quality minister Ben Bradshaw.

"In response to that demand we have developed this voluntary code of practice to advise the public, local authorities and the water industry how best to assess, control and deal with these odours."

But he warned consumers not to expect too much from the new guidelines.

"We do need to be realistic: while the new Code will help to tackle odour in many cases, it cannot guarantee that minor odour will not occur in all circumstances."

Part of the code urges companies to assess the impact of odours on local people and also advises them on dealing with complaints over the issue.
