Water companies must improve customer communication

28 April 2006

Water companies should take more time explaining to their customers how water resources management plans will affect them, an official consumer body has said.

The Consumer Council for Water (CCWater) said that consumers should have more involvement in developing plans and that the plans should be widely publicised through websites, leaflets and other information sources.

"Water customers see reliable 'water on tap' as a top priority, and their needs must be balanced alongside other pressures on water resources to ensure a sustainable water supply," argued Yve Buckland, the CCWater chair.

Dame Yve added: "Much is made of raising public awareness on drought related issues through a consultation process. The current drought has served to highlight the importance of ensuring that consumers are engaged in the process of developing water resources plans.

"They need simple, relevant, well targeted information."
