Water UK has expressed its scepticism over the viability of a nationally introduced water network, according to reports.
Barrie Clarke, director of communications at Water UK, has spoken out regarding his concerns over a national water network designed to help the drought conditions prevalent across the south-east of England at present.
Mr Clarke told BBC Radio Five Live's Midday News program that the system would be expensive to build and operate, while there would also be a number of environmental concerns.
He said: "We have got a lot of things to do with customers' bills already without a national water grid and in a way the environmental [considerations] are even stronger [than the economic ones].
"Water is where it is meant to be and if we can - which we believe we can - provide the water that people need within the area that they live then that makes the most sense."
