Customers in the Thames Valley saved the equivalent of a million bathtubs of water each day in July, according to new Thames Water figures.
The group has published results showing that its two million customers slashed their water use by 10.5 per cent – around 73 million litres – during July.
Given that July was the hottest month on record, Thames water is upbeat about the positive results and said the amount of water being saved since the hosepipe ban has been steadily increasing.
The figures also show that customers are saving more on hotter days when water usage goes down by about 15 per cent.
Duncan McCombie, Thames Water head of customer policy, said: "We want to say a big thank-you to all our customers who have been saving water during the drought, but, with temperatures high and the weather still fry, we need them to keep up the good work.
"We know the considerable fall in demand can't simply be due to the current restrictions, because research suggests only one in three of our customers owns a hosepipe.
"It just goes to show that if everyone makes small changes to their daily routines, such as only switching the washing machine or dishwasher on when they are full, it can help make a big difference."
