Water UK says August rain insufficient

1 September 2006

The UK is still suffering serious drought conditions in places despite higher than average rainfall in August, according to Water UK.

A spokesman for the company told BBC Radio 4's 'PM' programme that two dry winters had left groundwater levels worryingly low, although the last month had helped improve the situation at reservoirs, meaning the supply situation had stabilised.

Barrie Clark commented: "The water companies have been very active in helping to reduce demand everywhere and throughout the system and in increasing supply with extra boreholes and sources that are not being used at the moment."

He added that with 70% of the public supply in drought affected areas coming from groundwater, the situation is far from being resolved.

The spokesman commended the British people for their compliance with measures designed to keep water use to a minimum.

Thames Water yesterday announced an end to its drought order in the capital, although the hosepipe ban is set to remain in place.
