CCW warns of sewer flooding

4 September 2006

The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) has highlighted the growing problem of sewer flooding in the UK.

According to the organisation, sewer flooding is caused by existing problems in the sewerage system or episodes of severe flooding which overload the drains.

CCW has also issued advice to consumers to help decrease drain flooding problems. This included not disposing of nappies in the toilet and avoiding flushing fat down the kitchen sink.

Dame Yve Buckland, Chair of the Consumer Council for Water, said: "Downpours at the end of the summer are a known trigger for sewer flooding.

"The system can silt up during dry spells, and overflow in response to unusually heavy rainfall. Customers should ensure they use their system wisely, and avoid putting items into the drainage system like fat and nappies which will create blockages.

"Meanwhile, the water and sewerage companies should respond rapidly to severeflooding incidents to minimise the distress."
