Thames Water plans £1bn reservoir

15 September 2006

Thames Water is planning to build a £1 billion reservoir to meet the increased demand of its customers.

The new reservoir facility is due to be built at Abingdon, Oxfordshire and will hold around 150 million cubic metres of water.

It is billed as being the largest UK water facility to be built in 25 years and is scheduled for completion by 2018 – 2019. The new site will supply an extra 350 million litres of water a day.

Richard Aylard, Thames Water environmental director told BBC One the new reservoir would help to avoid water restrictions.

He said: "This year we have seen water restrictions in the form of hosepipe bans. We have narrowly averted the need for a drought order that would have restricted a wider range of uses.

"We don't ever want to have to do that to our customers again."
