Wessex Water fixes sewers with hi-tech solution

21 September 2006

Wessex Water has utilised state of the art technology to ensure sewer repairs in a town in Hampshire are undertaken as promptly as possible.

Fordingbridge is having its sewerage system repaired after CCTV footage showed the water network was leaking at several spots.

The project is part of a multi-million pound initiative by Wessex Water to stop groundwater from entering sewers.

It will take seven weeks to complete and will involve a robot passing through the sewer and stopping at every joint and inflating to create a vacuum around the joint. The joint is then pressure tested and the robot plugs any gaps with fast-setting acrylate gel to form a cohesive seal.

Julian Britton, senior engineer, said: "We originally planned to carry out this work during the summer but postponed it to avoid disrupting the tourist season.

"We are using a fast, efficient and sustainable means of sealing our sewers, using cutting edge technology which removes the need to dig up the road and so minimises disruption."
