Water companies could be made not-for-profit

22 September 2006

There is an argument for making water companies into not-for-profit organisations, according to one Liberal Democrat spokesman.

Martin Horwood MP suggested this week that such a regulatory overhaul could be an important step in improving water resource management.

He told BBC Two's Daily Politics show there was a model for such an agreement as with the Welsh not-for-profit water company, Dwr Cymru.

Mr Horwood added: "And they have actually managed to raise finance more cheaply; they have managed to invest more in the introduction.

"They are actually running a very successful company on a not-for-profit basis.

"It is a new model of ownership and they, for instance have invited rather than shareholders, they have great members and the members have to be representative of Welsh water customers and they get representation on the board so you can imagine what effect that would have on some of the other water companies."
