CCW to discuss bathing water quality

26 September 2006

The Consumer Council for Water (CCW) is to meet to discuss water quality in the western region this week.

The watchdog will be meeting water companies across Wessex and the south-west to discuss the quality of bathing water in the west's coastal areas.

Issues for discussion at the meeting include the capacity of the public sewerage system and whether it can cope with climate change in the future as well as the policy of compulsorily metering domestic properties in Bournemouth and West Hampshire.

Charles Howeson, CCW spokesman, said: "Here in the west, we have all benefited from the improvements to bathing water quality in our coastal areas.

"However, with the revised European Bathing Water Directive due to be implemented into UK legislation in 2008, any further improvements to meet the revised standards will need investment which ultimately will be paid by consumers through their water bills.

"We are looking forward to talking to Wessex Water and South West Water about the work that may be needed and what the implications of this new legislation could be on bill-paying consumers."
