Southern Water has responded to the Ofwat criticism that water companies are not following up on their investment promises.
The company has said that while others may be dragging their feet, Southern Water is delivering on its investment promises with £317 million in projects across Kent, Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Southern Water's £1.6 billion investment programme is due to run until 2010 and aims to improve customer service, tapwater and wastewater quality and safeguard water resources.
The expenditure for the five-year programme equates to a spend of around £1,200 of investment for every household in the Southern Water region.
In the 2005 drinking water quality report, it was shown that 99.1% of over 600,000 samples tested met the stringent water quality standards while there is a £3 million scheme in place across the company to treat drinking water.
