A problem with the pumps that draw water from Loch Ashey and Loch Duntelchaig into the Inverness Water Treatment Works has left thousands of Scottish homes without water today.
Approximately 37,000 consumers based in and around Inverness, Nairn and North Kessock are thought to have been affected and the staff of Scottish Water worked throughout the night in an attempt to get water back into their homes.
Sheila Campbell-Lloyd, a spokesperson from Scottish Water, said: "We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused. Our teams have been out through the night and have fixed the pumps which caused the problem.
"However, it will take several hours to replenish supplies in the area and restore tap water to the homes of all the customers affected," she concluded. Alternative supplies of bottled water are being arranged for special needs customers in the area.
Scottish Water is responsible for providing water services for 2.2 million households. It replaced the former water organisations, East of Scotland Water, North of Scotland Water and West of Scotland Water in April 2002.
