Thames Water announces flood-prevention scheme for Camden

4 January 2007

Residents in Camden can breathe a sigh of relief now that Thames Water has confirmed its plans to start a major scheme which will reduce the risk of sewer-flooding to local homes.

Over the past few years, over 100 homes in the north London borough have been subjected to sewer-flooding after severe weather took its toll on the area's antiquated sewer system.

Costing an estimated £4 million, the project will see the sewers replaced underneath streets in the NW6 postcode area, including Dennington Park Road, Holmdale Road, Mill Lane, Pandora Road, Sumatra Road and Solent Road.

"Our sewer system was built many years ago, with many tunnels dating back to the Victorian era and it wasn't designed to cope with climate change and the growth of the local population," explained Dave Meacham, Thames Water's project manager.

He added that while there would inevitably be some disruption, Thames Water was working closely with the Highways Agency and the local council to ensure that it was kept to a minimum.

Local residents have been invited to a drop-in session on January 9th, between 16:00-20:00GMT at West Hampstead Library, Dennington Park Road, so that Thames Water can explain the scheme in more detail. Residents have also been assured that they will be kept up-to-date on the project's progress.
