As Britain braces itself for this week's deep freeze, Severn Trent Water is advising customers to protect their pipes.
With the weather for the rest of the week likely to remain cold and icy, Severn Trent has come up with six steps to help avoid costly and wasteful burst water pipes.
Spokesman Ben Smallman said: "Burst pipes can cause distressing damage in the home, but we believe that prevention is better than cure and have come up with six simple steps to help our customers avoid ending up in deep water."
Some of the tips given by Severn Trent include advising people to make sure they know where their stop tap is, stop any draughts, and to insulate any water tanks and pipes in unheated areas.
Customers are also advised to call for a plumber immediately if their water supply becomes frozen, and not to wait for it to thaw.
