Thames Water is embarking on a £3 million scheme which will see Victorian water mains, which have caused a number of leaks and bursts in the Tulse Hill area of London, entirely replaced.
Work began on Monday this week and is expected to be completed by January 2008, affecting a number of areas in the region including Rosendale Road, Thurlow Park, Elmcourt Road, Norwood Road, Trinity Rise and Brockwell Park Gardens in the mean time.
Thames Water's Project Manager, Duncan Wainwright, said that the team was becoming well-versed in the art of replacing mains pipes as it had racked up over 400 miles of replaced piping in the past four years.
"We have chosen to replace the pipes in this area because it has some of the oldest, leakiest and most burst-prone pipes in London. We appreciate that work of this scale will inevitably cause some disruption and inconvenience, but the benefits will be felt for years to come and we don't expect to have to return to deal with burst pipes or leaking mains in future," he added.
Mr Wainwright also promised to minimise disruption where possible by using the latest construction techniques, which in may places will avoid the need to dig long trenches as well as working hard to reduce the impact of their works on surrounding traffic.
Concerned residents can find out more about the work at a drop-in session to be held on February 19th at Pavillion Salle, Dulwich College, Dulwich Common between 16.30 and 18.30GMT or by calling Thames Water's Customer Centre on 0845 9200 800 and quoting reference number BB747779.
