Following the water industry's declaration last week that underground reservoirs were near to full, South West Water has declared that it is on course for a continuous 11-year run that is free of water restrictions.
Ofwat stated last week that despite the predicted hot summer it was "unlikely" that the country would face water restrictions like hose pipe bans, thanks to the wet winter of 2006/7.
South West Water puts its impressive record down to the help of its customers and "its own three-pronged water resources strategy".
Dr Stephen Bird, South West Water's Operations Director, confirmed that in his view, the utility company's investment strategy had been key to keeping water flowing.
"Over the last 11 years the company has made significant investment into improving our water resources position by reducing leakage, implementing pumped storage and making massive enhancements to water treatment and the distribution network...
Dr Bird continued: "We cannot afford to become complacent over this vital issue and South West Water continually reviews its water resource strategy to meet future population growth and climate change."
He added that he wished to thank South West Water's customers for continuing to use water wisely and for fitting water-saving devices like "hippos" in their toilets. Dr Bird also said that according to the firm's latest records, over 60% of their customers were now using water meters.
