Consumers in Leicestershire are set to benefit from Severn Trent Water's latest pledge to cut down on the number of leakages.
Should it succeed, the water supplier will save large amounts of money and will be able to pass on its savings to its consumers' bills.
Over 1.6 million has been put aside to tackle Leicestershire's leaky water pipes, with particular emphasis being put on the student area of Evington in Leicester.
"Around half the existing pipework dates back to the pre-war era with the rest built in the 1950s. They've certainly served their time and have started showing signs of wear and tear which leads to a higher chance of leaks," said Severn Trent's General Manager for Distribution Alan Payne.
"We are determined to drive down leakage and this 1.6 million investment reflects just how importantly we view that challenge."
Mr Payne continued to say that Severn Trent was working closely with the local council to keep disruption to a minimum. The project is due to finish in a year's time and will spread from the city centre to over a million homes across Leicestershire.
