Severn Trent Water has come out top in a study of drinking water quality in England and Wales.
According to extensive tests carried out by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI), the company beat the ten major water and sewerage companies for the quality of its drinking water
Over 99% of more than 500,000 tests on Severn Trent's water met the DWI's strict standards.
David Wickens, Severn Trent's Quality and Environmental Manager, said the results were due to hours of hard work to ensure drinking water meets safety guidelines.
"We invest millions each year to ensure that our water treatment works attain the highest possible quality standards 24 hours a day, every day.
"We are extremely pleased that our investment and hard work is reflected in this years results but we will not be stopping there."
He also explained that in the years up to 2010 the company would be implementing schemes to control nitrate levels, modernise filtration equipment, as well as a comprehensive mains cleaning programme.
He added: "These results show that if you want safe, healthy water, you can't do better than reach for a glass of tap water."
