Gloucestershire homes without water following floods

23 July 2007

Thousands of Gloucestershire homes are without water today after Severn Trent's pumps became engulfed in flood water over the weekend.

It is the Mythe Water Treatment Works in Tewkesbury, which provides water for Gloucester and Cheltenham that was affected, meaning around 140,000 people in 70,000 homes are without water.

Similarly, the flooding near South East London has caused Sutton and East Surrey Water to warn customers to boil tap water before consuming it after flood water affected the water supply from the company's Cheam water treatment site.

Bottled water has been supplied to households in Gloucestershire, although warnings have since been put in place over the limited availability of such water.

It is estimated that, despite water possibly not returning to taps for another 48 hours, there is only around 20 hours of bottled water left.
