60,000 Gloucestershire homes to receive running water

30 July 2007

Water company Severn Trent has announced that it will begin pumping water back to Gloucestershire homes today, although it will be several days before all homes receive running water.

The water firm has revealed that 60,000 homes will receive running water from midday today.

The homes that do receive water are still being advised not to drink it however, as there is a chance that contaminated rainwater may still be in the pipes.

Speaking about the news, Andy Smith, Severn Trent's director of water services, said: "This a controlled process to refill more than a thousand miles of empty water pipes and we must emphasise that it may take several days for supplies to filter through to 60,000 homes in Gloucester.

"We cannot give exact timescales for how long this process will take, as it is heavily dependant on demand levels.

"We are expecting high demand because, understandably, people who have been without water for more than a week will be eager to make use of a reconnected mains supply."

The restoration of services in Gloucestershire comes after the Mythe water treatment works in Tewkesbury was restored, following it being submerged in flood water earlier this month.
