Ofwat: millions of litres saved a year

18 October 2007

The water industry watchdog has announced significant gains in efficiency, as it releases the latest supply results.

In its new Security of Supply 2006-07 report, Ofwat said that, following advice to use water wisely, providers and their customers made water savings of 65 million litres per day.

This equates to the daily water use of 440,000 people - and also reflects a third consecutive year-on-year fall in the amount of water lost through leakage.

Commenting on the report, Chief Executive of Ofwat Regina Finn said: "The focus by customers and companies on using water wisely is very important when companies are calculating how much water their customers will need over time and planning to find the water resources to meet that need."

Of all UK water suppliers, only one (Severn Trent) has failed to meet its leakage target for the 2006-07 period.

Total levels of leakage are now one-third lower than their 1994 peak, the report added.
