Brighton water pipes upgrade 'will cause disruption'

7 January 2008

Southern Water's ongoing project to update Victorian mains systems will partially close a major Brighton road during the busy summer season, it has emerged.

Metal piping is to be replaced with the more durable plastic alternative between the Grand Hotel and the Palace Pier.

This will mean that roadworks will be installed, from today, along one of the tourist town's busiest thoroughfares, the Brighton Argus reports.

The work is the latest stage in Southern Water's £15.5 million modernisation project.

Local cab driver Vicki Morgan, talking to the newspaper, commented: "The seafront is always a nightmare whether there are roadworks or not - on a Saturday or Sunday the whole seafront is gridlocked with people going to the beach or the shops.

"I don't want to think about what it will be like with roadworks as well."

A significant proportion of Brighton and Hove's water network was originally installed between 120 and 150 years ago - and remains unchanged to this day.

The multi-million Southern Water project began in June 2006 and is scheduled to be completed next December.
