Water firms 'to be held to account' at meetings

23 January 2008

The new 25-year plans put forward by several water providers operating in the south west are set to be discussed by the Consumer Council for Water (CCW).

Representatives from South West Water, Wessex Water, Bristol Water and Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water are all set to be questioned by the public at the CCW-hosted meeting, to be held in Torquay at the end of the month.

The plans - detailing the expenditure, consumer and environmental improvements promised from each firm - are required by industry regulator Ofwat.

Additionally, CCW are encouraging members of the public who wish to comment on the firms' recent performance to attend the meeting.

A separate meeting regarding Welsh Water, whose performance has recently been criticised by some customers, has also been scheduled in Haverfordwest for January 29th.

Chair of CCW Wales Diane McCrea said: "These public meetings are one way in which we can highlight consumer’s concerns, challenge companies to address the unresolved complaints referred to us, and take meaningful action to satisfy consumers."

CCW is the representational group for water customers in the UK - and reports public concerns to the government.
