The amount households pay for their water services will be determined by the home's size, under an innovative new billing system from Thames Water.
Homes supplied by the company which do not have water meters installed will now be placed in one of three charging bands, based on how many bedrooms they contain.
As a consequence of the change, smaller homes could see bills drop - although larger ones could see water costs increase.
Customer Services Director at Thames Water Mike Tempest said: "We know that customers want to pay for what they use; by splitting the charge into three bands, their bills will better reflect the true consumption."
The billing reforms come following a major services survey conducted by the company among its customers last year.
Mr Tempest added: "We would like to thank everyone who took part in the survey - over 90% replied and there's no doubt that this high response rate has helped us to design a system which is as fair and accurate as possible."
