Ofwat fine 'is a good move'

10 April 2008

In the wake of the news that Ofwat is to fine Severn Trent Water for misleading consumers, uSwitch.com has said that it is a good move.

Head of Home Services at the organisation Tim Wolfenden said that it is important consumers see the benefits from the fine and that Ofwat makes sure this happens.

Severn Trent has acted well, he noted, in revealing that it will lower the bills given to customers in the bid to reduce its own profits.

But he also suggested that the money be used to enhance water systems in the UK that could do with an upgrade.

"I would like to see Ofwat go one step further and prescribe what should be done with the fine - it would serve everybody's interests best if this £35.8 million fine was invested directly into improving our worn-out water systems," he asserted.

Regina Finn from Ofwat said that the fine should highlight the importance of treating customers with due care.
